Acronyms
Introduction
For brevity in typing, the net tends to spawn a huge number of acronyms. Much of the contemporary scene has grown up around the net in such news groups as the alt.sex groups and soc.subculture groups. As a result, the same tendency to turn absolutely everything in to an acronym has carried over. These lists attempt to cover most of the ones in common use.
Separate Lists
While there is some cross over, there are generally separate acronyms for scene concepts, for net concepts and so on. For clarity's sake, we have broken the lists in to their separate subjects.
Searching
The quickest way to find an entry is to use the search in your browser. Ctrl-F should pop up a search box in most browsers, type in the acronym you are looking for and it will attempt to find it throughout the list.You may find that the acronym you are looking for is made up of one or more others. For example ROTFLMAO is made up of both Rolls On The Floor Laughing and Laughing My Ass Off. If you can not find an acronym, try shortening your search to the first few characters and you may be able to find the stem.
Capitalisation
All entries are in CAPS, even if the usual usage involves lower case. The reason for this is that some search methods are case sensitive, matching lowercase search terms with CAPS results but not CAPS search terms with lowercase results. Our using all CAPS should make it easier for you to find the entries you are looking for.
Using The Dictionary
Most of the entries simply cover translation of the acronym in to the words it stands for. If you are not sure what a word means, the main dictionary should cover it.
If You Can Not Find A Listing
Make sure you have checked each of the lists. What may appear at first to be a scene term, may in fact simply be a net acronym that has popped up unexpectedly.If you really can not find it, use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page, let us know, and we will attempt to track it down for you and add it to the list.
