The Internet Scene
Introduction
For many people, the Internet is the easiest and most reassuring way to begin discovering the scene. It has the potential to offer access to huge volumes of information and the chance to explore but, perhaps more importantly, to realise there are hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of others out there who experience the same things and feel the same emotions.
This section is intended to address as much as possible of this side of the scene: To help make it more accessible and more reassuring and to offer support to those who explore it, even when many of the others who are doing the same have such a tendency to spout half truths and misconceptions.
A Dedication
I want to dedicate this section to a dear friend, a Domme who I will only ever know as Lilu. She was one of the strongest supporters of Soul's Haven, believing deeply in what we had to say and the reasons we felt it needed to be said. It was her request that such a section be created and she hoped that she could contribute to it. That was only a week or so before her death. A few days later, I find myself writing this part of the site, hoping it will do her justice.
It has been said that, so long as you live on in the hearts and memories of others, you are never truly gone. Hopefully this will then serve as some kind of lasting memorial to her. To offer more, all I can say is, ask me about her sometime and I will do my best to honestly share the happy, quirky memories that I have of her.
A Brief Overview
How To Be A Complete Idiot
I have been avoiding writing this for a long time, despite an almost overwhelming urge to do so, because I completely accept that everyone has the right to make mistakes while they are learning. The problem is, so many people make these mistakes and yet make no effort whatsoever to learn. They have their notions of what is acceptable and they stick to them regardless of what anyone else tries to show them. If nothing else, the hope is that this page will give those who become their victims somewhere to point them to and say, "See! What you're doing is widely accepted as un-cool."
Net Acronyms
Since before the World Wide Web, back when the net was just the net, people have been using abbreviations to save time when typing. For the uninitiated (and, from time to time, even those of use who have been using the net for years) they can be next to impenetrable. So, here's a cross-link to the Acronyms part of the Dictionary section of the site. We hope it helps.
The Different Net Forums
There are a lot of different ways to explore and participate in the scene on the internet. Different forms have their own advantages and disadvantages and finding the right one for you can make all the difference. This article looks at the most common forums and what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Ideas For Long Distance Relationships
A lot of use experience long distance D/s relationships for one reason or another. Sometimes we have met over the Internet. At other time, life forces us apart for a while. Coming up with inventive ideas for what to do, when you are unable to touch them, can become quite a challenge. So, here is a long list of ideas that can hopefully provide some starting points.
Story Codes
With all of the erotic fiction posted to the newsgroups, a system was needed to categorize it so that people could tell at a glance what a given story was likely to be about. That system evolved as a series of letter codes that could be placed in the description of the story or the title.
This page provides a list of most of the commonly used codes, their usage, and what is hopefully a convenient way to search for them.
