Creating A Basic Toy Box
Buying custom made toys can be expensive. Good quality leather-, rope- and metal-work takes a lot of time and effort, with the prices reflecting that.
While nothing can quite compare with a range of custom made toys, it is still possible to improvise for a fraction of the cost. For less than the cost of a single well made toy, you can set up a well equipped basic toy box that you can use as the basis to build on later, when experience and money permit.
Blindfolds
For out and out style, little beats a plain, black, silk scarf. While not everyone has one, it is the kind of thing that may well already be sitting in a wardrobe, waiting to be discovered.
If a scarf is not available, one of the easiest things to get hold of, assuming you travel, is an airline eye-mask. Airlines tend to hand these out for free, so all you need to do is remember to keep hold of it when you leave the flight. After all, it is a blindfold - exactly what you are after, so why turn down a free gift. It is worth noting that different airlines provide different quality masks, but most will do the job (hopefully without the poor jokes Virgin like to write across theirs).
Restraints
Wrists
Metal hand cuffs are available fairly commonly, everywhere from adult stores to children's toys shops. They will normally set you back about ten pounds (fifteen dollars), depending on where you buy them from. While they are certainly worth adding to any collection, be careful as metal handcuffs are not the most comfortable of things and many are badly made, either tightening or catching skin when you do not want them too. Apart from for show, we would really not recommend the plastic alternative as they are almost universally badly made and a little effort will simply break them.
Traditional handcuffs aside, all you really need to secure wrists is a length of, ideally soft, cord. The belt from a bathrobe can be idea for this.
Ankles
The ideal toy, for playing with restraining ankles, is a spreader bar. Buying a real spreader bar, of any quality, is not cheap. It also tends to be fairly large and walking out of a store, even if it is only to your car, tends to draw attention.
Making your own spreader bar is actually pretty easy. A three foot (or whatever length you choose) pipe forms the basis for it. So long as it is reasonably strong, hot water piping from a hardware store is ideal.
Once you have the pipe, take about five feet [for a three foot bar] of cord. Slide the cord through the pipe and use the ends to form loops to go around the submissive's ankles. That is all it takes.
Note: If you can not find soft cord, make the cord longer so it can wrap around the submissives ankles several times to balance out the pressure and stop it cutting in.
General
While we have covered basic options for wrist and ankle restraints, there are still a lot of other options still available, if you want to go a little further.
Hardware stores are a great place to raid as they tend to have a range of sizes and weights of both chain and rope. For relatively little you can buy enough chain to thoroughly wrap someone in it, or enough rope to explore oriental rope bondage.
When buying chain, there are a few things to consider: Check to see if it is coated - some people get a reaction to metal against their skin, so coated chain may work better. Make sure it is a heavy enough chain - you want to make sure the submissive's struggling will not break it. Equally, be careful of the total weight - you do not want it getting too heavy. Finally, consider how you are going to fasten it - by the time you buy several that will hold up, padlocks get expensive. Again, you may want to improvise and see what you can find.
If you are buying rope: is it soft enough, smooth enough, etc. to be comfortable? Too abrasive rope will prove very uncomfortable, very quickly (though, of course, this may be exactly what you want).
Straps
You almost certainly have a perfectly serviceable strap. In fact, you are probably wearing it around your waist now. A leather belt is all you need for a basic strap.
The more worn the belt, the better. As it is worn in, the leather will become softer and more flexible, giving you a greater degree of control.
Use the non-buckled end of the belt to beat with. Start off with maybe six inches sticking out from your hand. Flicked well, six inches will probably be plenty. If you want to be able to deliver more force, let more out.
Never use the buckled end, or a belt with the end enclosed in metal. Having metal on the end of what you are beating with is a pretty good way to guarantee that you will injure someone.
Floggers
The traditional, British Navy, "cat'o'nine tails" was made by unravelling the strands of a length of rope, then knotting them off. You can do exactly the same, so long as you can find heavy enough rope.
A quick note here: Try and avoid using man-made fibres. The plastic coatings will generally make the flogger much more vicious, causing much more pain than you intended.
Clamps
Clothespins
Clothespins (clothespegs for English readers) are a great way to get clamps in bulk. A large bag will generally cost you next to nothing and leave you with a lot of possibilities for play.
Ideally, you should go for wooden clothespins. There are two main reasons for this: plastic ones tend to be more vicious; wooden ones allow you to customised them a little more (more on that later). A third reason, though it is just an opinion, is that wooden ones look more stylish.
Check clothespins before you use them, maybe even sorting them in to different sets. Different pins can have different strengths. It you need to loosen one, work its jaws repeatedly - with time it will get weaker. If you find that you want stronger ones, and shopping around has not helped, a rubber band around the jaws can make them tighter.
For an added twist, hammering nails just through the jaws (no, not when they are on someone!) means that the pressure will be distributed over only a few small points, rather than the whole area of the jaw. This can be used to make them much more vicious.
Zippers
A zipper is a row of clothespins with a cord running through them. The cord is secured to the last clothespin. When the other end of the cord is pulled away from the body, the clothespins are pulled off in succession.
The faster and harder you pull, the faster they come off. Some people like to make it a slow, lingering torment, while others prefer to make it fast and intense.
Hair-clips
Spring-jawed, ideally toothed, hair-clips work in pretty much the same way as clothespins. They provide a larger clamp that can work well on larger areas of skin or flesh. You should be able to find them in a variety of sizes from under an inch to as large as six inches.
Bulldog Clips
The clips used for securing paper to clipboards provide a cheap and, generally, pretty vicious clamp, if that is what you are after.
Sensation Play
Cold
Ice is readily available to most people. Tracing lines across nervous skin can be intense. Holding it in your hand, until it starts to melt, can cause drips of near freezing water.
For ice dildos and the like, try suspending a condom in a narrow tube (the tube stops the condom bulging out too much), filling it with water and putting it in the freezer. Once it freezes you should have your very own ice dildo.
For the show offs, performing oral sex with a mouthful of a liqueur, such as creme-de-menthe, will create intense sensations due to the alcohol (as well as helping with the taste for those who are otherwise uncomfortable). Blowing over the area afterwards chills it even further.
Hot
Candles and hot wax play deserve their own section, else where. None the less, they can generally be bought cheaply.
Toothpaste, on sensitive areas, tends to create a hot sensation due to the chemicals in it. Be ready to wash it off, quickly, if it proves too intense. In the same way, chillies and tiger balm have similar effects.
When using chemical heat, be very careful to avoid: eyes; over using it; overly sensitive areas [do not even think of trying it on mucus membranes until you are certain you know how to control it]; and getting it on other things so you accidentally reapply it later.
You may want to try contrasting hot and cold for even greater effect.
Touch
Collect scraps of different materials. [Fake, if you prefer] rabbit fur can make for intense sensations when rubbed over a sensitive body. Other materials can create other, equally fun, sensations.
Alternatively, use the edge of a piece of card, or a feather drawn against the grain, to create the sensation of a sharp edge for fake kinfe-play Once blindfolded, imagination tends to turn even the simplest of things in to something much, much, worse.
Abrasive materials, so long as they are used carefully, are also worth exploring. Sandpaper, scouring pads, even itchy woollen clothing, can all be used for an intense experience.
Conclusion
Potential toys are all around you, they just need a little imagination to identify them. Hopefully we have given you enough ideas to start a basic toy box. If you have any more suggestions, we would love to hear about them. As always, you can reach us through the Contact Us page in the Introduction.
