Gags
The First Rule Of Gags
Whatever type of gag you go for, there's one fundamental rule to using gags - never leave anyone alone while gagged. No matter how much of a gap around it there may be, even if you're just using a ball gag, you're interfering with someone's breathing and things can go wrong the moment your back is turned. Always make sure you're watching anyone you have gagged.
Safewords
A common question with gags is how do you safeword? Just because someone can not speak, does not mean the can not signal. We use clicking fingers. If you can't click your fingers try: stamping feet; shaking heads; basically anything you can think of that works for you, just like normal safewords.
Bit Gags
Bit gags are essentially just a bar that goes across the front of the mouth and straps behind the head. They can be embellished in all sorts of ways - rubber coatings, leather, or they can be left as plain metal or wood.
Bit gags are some of the easiest to find (every adult store seems to stock them these days) and they're easy to improvise - all they are is a bar and straps. For the ponyplay fan, there's also nothing more authentic. They're also some of the safest to use in terms of avoiding suffocation.
Where bit gags fail is in comfort and effect. Being a bar, they really dig in to the side of the mouth and get get very uncomfortable very quickly. They're also just a bar and really do very little to actually gag a sub.
Ball Gags
Anyone who has watched pulp fiction knows what a ball gag looks like. Usually made of rubber it looks like a pool ball with straps to hold it in place. There is one other main variation on ball gags and that is, rather than being solid, some ball gags have air holes through them which make breathing around it much easier.
When a ball gag works well, it can be the perfect fit to your sub's mouth. It will stop them from getting any more than a muffled sound out, it avoids the whole messy drool thing (if you want to avoid that at all, that is *grin*) and works wonders for creating that slightly panicked look.
Non-holed ball gags do block the mouth completely and so you really need to be careful with breathing. It has already been mentioned, never leave someone unattended with a gag in place and even more so, not with a ball gag. Holed ball gags lessen this problem to a large degree, though they are somewhat less effective and do re-introduce the drool issue. Even with a holed gag, once again, never leave someone unattended with a gag in place.
A well fitting ball gag can work wonders. The problem is, everyone's mouth is a different size. Get the ball too small and it is not going to do its job properly - it will slide around, it won't stop them talking or drooling around it. Get the gag too large and it will probably hurt from the start. Even if it does not hurt straight off, it will do, fairly quickly. Getting the right size is imperative. If you scene with only one sub, make sure you buy one that fits her properly. If you intend to gag more than one sub over time, get a selection of different sizes.
Though ball gags hurt the sides of the mouth less than bit gags, a friend recommends replacing the straps with thinner, softer, ties as they cut in less.
Ring Gags
Ring gags are essentially large O shapes that hold the jaws open. Like a ball gag they immobilise the jaws though they do not block the mouth. The fun with a ring gag comes with the fact that a submissive can not close their mouth, no matter what you choose to introduce in to it. Quite what potential that has can no doubt be left to your imagination.
As with ball gags, you are forcing the jaws to their limits, so getting the size right is important. Also remember that when putting things in to someone's mouth, touching the back of their mouth may cause them to gag.
Stuffing The Mouth
First off, apologies for the title. No one could think of a single generic term for this type of gagging.
Simply covering the mouth with a cloth or tape - the traditional gag - usually doesn't make a huge amount of difference. Most people can still just about talk through that. The problem is that the tongue is still free to make most of the word shapes. The obvious next step is to stuff something in to the mouth which disables the tongue and then tape or tie around the outside of the mouth to hold it in place.
The great thing about this style of gag is that you can use almost anything (anything that's safe to put in to a mouth). The obvious ones are a handkerchief or underwear (clean/used, it is up to you) but you are free to be more imaginative too. What you use can be chosen to be just the right size for your sub too. So you end up with an essentially free, perfectly sized, gag.
As the mouth is obstructed, you need to be very careful with breathing. More so as there's the risk of whatever you have stuffed with will move in to the throat and could cause choking.
If you are using tape to secure the gag, you need to take some basic precautions: Is the tape going to come off again? Some tapes are much easier to remove than others. Is it going to do anything nasty to the skin? Micropore tape, used to secure dressings is a good choice to avoid problems. Is the glue on the tape toxic? If you've got it over a mouth, you do not want to find the adhesive is going to make your sub ill. And finally, does your sub have any hairs near their lips? If they do, it will hurt coming off, though that may be fun if it is intentional.
Inflatable Gags
Inflatable gags work in a fairly similar way to stuffing a submissive's mouth. With an inflatable gag, you can inflate it until it fills the mouth well, giving much of the snugness of a ball gag but a custom fit.
The danger with inflatable gags, as with stuffing mouths to a lesser degree, comes from putting pressure on the roof of the mouth. Apparently this can cause the nose to block (don't ask me the details, I failed to get in to med school). If you do use these types of gag, be very careful to pay complete attention to your submissive as complications may set in very quickly.
